STAKE IN BETS

There is no way to be successful in sports betting without optimal control of our funds. When we talk about fund management, or bankroll management, we are talking about how to manage the total balance that we have to play on bookmaker sites.

The main problem of new bettors is the lack of knowledge they have when it comes to managing the bankroll and for this reason, it is common for the vast majority to see the balance of their accounts decrease. There are tools that can help us have better control and avoid mismanagement of our money, such as an Excel spreadsheet to track your bets.

Having a follow-up of the bets made helps us to see those bets that give us more successes and those that make us fail more. It also helps us to control the money that we are entering with the successes and the one that we lose with the errors, something very useful to elaborate our betting strategies and see the disciplines or markets that we are best at, as well as the type of bet that best It suits us and avoid those that make us lose continuously.

  • Stake and its management

Once this point is clear, let's see how to better manage our money and what are the most popular bankroll control strategies. In other words, what interests us is learning to determine the stake to know how much to bet in each case.

STAKE is a term that comes from English that we could translate as "bet", "participation", "interest" or "investment". We will define what the stake is as the amount of money that we risk in a forecast and reflects the confidence or risk that we have when placing a specific bet. It is usually expressed in values ranging from 1 to 10: 1 being the lowest stake and 10 the highest stake (maximum confidence or full stake).

We recommend that the maximum bet never exceed 10% of the bankroll and in case you are an inexperienced or average player, that amount should never exceed 5% of the bankroll.

We also remember that it is necessary to update the bankroll frequently (after each bet or each day) if we want to calculate the stakes correctly. Indeed, the bankroll rises or falls depending on our profits and losses, so these variations must be taken into account.

  • Stake scale

    - Stake 1 and 2 or low stake: 1% and 2% of your bank. We apply it when there are high odds around the underdogs and that might be high odds. We can apply it when we consider that the underdog has a chance of victory.

    - Stake 3 or average stake: 3% of your bank. For bets where confidence is low or you don't have enough information to assign a higher stake.

    - Stake 4 or average stake: 4% of your bank. We will use it in those positions in which we trust but do not have much information.

    - Stake 5 or medium/high stake: 5% of your bank. This is usually one of the most applied. It is used when you have a good understanding of the market that revolves around the pick.

    - Stake 6 or medium/high stake: 6% of your bank. This stake demonstrates a medium-high confidence in the pick that we are going to make due to a good knowledge of the market together with factors and data in favor of the bet that we are going to make.

    - Stake 7 and 8 or high stake: 7% and 8% of your bank respectively. We will apply this stake to the picks whose probability of failure we see as very low because we have very good information about the forecast.

    - Stake 9 or 10 full stake: 9% and 10% of your bank. We have very high confidence due to a possible fix that we have obtained information about, for example. If you follow a tipster who regularly uses this stake, do not trust him too much. It means that you are not very skilled at betting or managing your bankroll.

Medium stake bets (4, 5 or 6) are usually the most common bets.

What we have just explained is a very simple way of assigning stakes and like everything else, it can become more complex if we take into account more factors.

  • Linear stake management

In our opinion, linear stake management is the best betting strategy for people just starting out in sports betting. It is a conservative method and allows you to gain experience, little by little.

With this system, our maximum bet will be a fixed percentage of the bankroll. To define the amount of money to risk in each forecast, we will have to assign a confidence level to each bet (from 1 to 10 for example). Depending on this, we will bet more or less money.

A player with little experience in the online betting sector should not risk more than 5% of his bank on the same bet. That would be his maximum bet (or full stake) from him. If for example he has a bankroll of 200 euros, it means that the maximum stake will be 10 euros (maximum confidence level). In general, an average (reasonable) bet would be 2.5%, that is to say 5 euros in our example.
